Venetian Masks
An unusual lesson-show about Commedia dell’Arte
Performed by Vanni Carpenedo
Language: Italian + English translation
Running time: 45 minutes
The main characters of the Commedia dell’Arte such as Pantalone and Arlecchino, were created in Venice between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Masks have provided an endless source of comedy and laughter, representing and preserving the ancient wisdom and techniques of traditional theatre and are still, to this day, hugely fascinating.
Through our performances, set in a typical and prestigious Venetian setting, you will discover the physical and moral characteristics behind the principal masks through sketches and improvisations taken from Renaissance pieces and plays by Carlo Goldoni. You will see how the characters move and act; you will hear their voices; you will understand what drives their thoughts and passions.
